Matt Robinson has been an active acoustic and electric bassist throughout California since 1993. He has toured in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Washington state. Robinson performed at the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) 2004 Annual Conference, in Long Beach, and at its New York City conference in 2005. He is a resident of Sacramento, Calif. where he frequently works with many of the area's finest musicians in several different genres including modern jazz, classic jazz, Latin jazz, chamber music, orchestral and funk.
For three years, Robinson has been on the faculty and staff for both the Sacramento State University's jazz studies department and for American River College's music department. At Sacramento State, he teaches jazz bass and instructs jazz combos. At American River College, he serves as an instructional assistant in the music department. To his students, he emphasizes the importance of tune memorization, transposition, transcription, tone production, development of analytical skills, development and application of general musicianship skills, rhythmic solidarity, improvisation, as well as organized, methodical listening to influential jazz recordings.
In 2003, he earned his master's degree in double bass performance, studying under Tom Derthick. As a graduate student he worked with Director of Jazz Studies, Steve Roach, where he acted as an assistant director of jazz combos and assistant director of jazz lab bands. At Sac State, he's had the opportunity to perform with visiting jazz musicians Art Lande, John Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Ingrid Jensen and Bobby Shew.
